Trying Something New
“Alright, everyone, let’s start painting! Remember to have fun and let your creativity flow!” Mr. Chen, the Art Instructor announced, his voice lively as he clapped his hands. “I can’t wait to see your unique masterpieces!”
I adjusted the strap of my paint-splattered apron, feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety swirl in my stomach. Today was my first painting class, and I was determined to embrace the challenge of embracing new experience. Growing up, art class had always been a source of dread for me. I would rather be outdoors than being stuck indoors drawing or colouring something. The mere thought of wrestling with crayons and markers made my stomach churn. I recalled my days in Kindergarten when I tried to colour within the lines, I often felt more defeated than inspired.
Yet, today was different.
Standing in that vibrant studio on the first day of painting class, something shifted within me. My best friend, Marie wanted me to join her for an art workshop. Initially I declined but she reminded me of my new year resolution that I set for myself this year was to pursue new adventure. Today is the day where I will explore another side of myself and take on this fresh challenge. I wanted to push past my previous fears and discover the joy that might come from trying something new, even if it meant facing the unknown.
With bold strokes, I began to create a sunset over a calm sea, each colour blending together as I lost myself in the process. The brush glided across the canvas like magic, and I felt a thrill at the freedom of expression that painting offered. “Who knew trying something new could feel this freeing?” I thought, excitement bubbling within me. Just as I was ready to add a splash of bright orange to the sky for good luck, I felt a twinge of nervousness—what if I messed up?
As I dipped my brush into what I thought was orange, I was met with a shocking surprise. Instead of the warm, sunny hue I expected, a clump of muddy brown splattered across my canvas. My heart sank as I stared in horror at the unexpected mess. “Oh…..No!” I cried, my voice breaking the focused silence of the room.
Mr. Chen rushed over, his laughter echoing in the studio. “Did you accidentally grab the wrong paint?” he asked, a twinkle in his eye. I glanced at my palette and realised I had mistaken the brown for orange! My cheeks flushed with embarrassment, and I felt the weight of failure settle over me.
But then, a thought struck me: trying something new meant embracing the unexpected. With Mr. Chen’s encouragement, I took a deep breath and decided to wipe the canvas clean, viewing this setback as just another part of my learning experience. I picked up a new canvas and began again. This time, I decided to try something different. I chose brighter, bolder colours, letting my imagination run wild. I painted swirling patterns that danced across the surface, and with every stroke.
When I finally stepped back, I couldn’t believe my eyes. My new painting was a burst of joy—vivid colours swirled together, creating a playful interpretation of a sunset. With a proud smile, I knew I was ready to show it off.
As I walked home, I held my painting carefully, excitement bubbling inside me. “Look what I made, Mum!” I exclaimed when I entered the house, my heart racing. Her eyes widened with delight as she admired my creation.
Even though my first attempt at painting had gone awry, I learned a valuable lesson about how trying something new may present challenges, but it also gifted me a beautiful memory and a newfound appreciation for creativity. From that day forward, I promised myself to embrace every opportunity to try something new.
