How to DSA to top secondary schools (Open House 2026 Nan Hua High Special)

Guide to DSA-Secondary School Series

The Ministry of Education Direct School Admission (DSA-Sec) exercise allows Primary 6 students to gain conditional entry into secondary schools based on their talents, strengths, and potential, rather than purely PSLE scores.

When to prepare for DSA?

The Singapore education has a reputation being an education “arms race.” It is no secret that some parents start preparing their children for DSA since preschool, exposing them to a myriad of enrichment activities from Gymnastics, Table Tennis to Music, Arts and Craft. The list is endless. Other parents start DSA preparation since lower primary, choosing an area or areas to focus on for their children. But reality is, this early preparation may not always work in their favour. DSA selection is about depth not breadth. Parents with children in P4 or P5 can still stand a chance in preparing for the DSA route by working with their children on their areas of interest, encouraging them to work on their strengths.

Some have argued that the DSA system has said “weaponised” by parents with means and resources, parents who are able to “invest heavily” in their children with endless stream of DSA enrichment classes like Basketball, Table Tennis, Violin. But it is not all grim for the average parents, if you feel that your children has a strength in certain area, it is still worth to let your children explore the possibility of entering schools through DSA.

Preparing for DSA – What are the important factors to consider?

For most schools, the DSA selection process involves an interview and written test (especially for schools like NUS High). It is pivotal that parents select schools beyond the prestige and really think if your child can continue to thrive or manage the academic rigours demanded by the school. For instance, when a student dsa into prestigious schools like ACS or MGS, they will be required to take the IB curriculum where they have to take subjects like Language Arts (a combination of English and English Literature) for the next 4 to 6 years of their academic career.
