List of TYS EL ORAL QUESTIONS

Topic: Leisure / Recreation / Youth / Extreme Sport

Video of people skateboarding

Planned Response:

Would you recommend this activity / such a recreational activity to young people? Why or Why not?

Candidates were shown a video of people skateboarding and asked to comment if they would recommend this extreme sport to other young people.

Suggested Response:

Most certainly! (State your stand clearly) I would love to spread my passion for skateboarding to other youths. (Link to video)

There are a plethora of reasons why I would do so. (List your two PEEL paragraphs with PERSONAL EXPERIENCE). Candidates can express their preference or dislike for this particular form of extreme sport. Those who are in favour can share how they attempted similar sport or had a liberating experience cruising on the skateboard. For instance, candidates can say “When I step on my board, it’s like all my worries melt away.  My favourite spot to skateboard is the Extreme Skatepark at East Coast Park as it is just a stone throw from where I stay. I love the feeling of hitting up these skate parks, or somethings I can just find a random curb around my HDB and practise. The sense of euphoria and liberation that I feel on the skateboard is out of this world!”

For candidates aiming to impress, be sure to add in a well considered perspective, you can express how you acknowledge that skateboarding may not be something that is up everyone’s alley or right up one’s street (pun intended!) Some may hesitate as they may perceived it as risky or dangerous. Riding on wheels, performing tricks, and navigating obstacles can lead to injuries if one’s not careful. Some people might not be willing to take that risk or have phobia due to  injuries. Candidates can also acknowledge how youth’s interests and hobbies are as diverse as their personalities, and it’s important to respect that not everyone will share the same passions. Just as each individual has unique tastes in music, art, or food, so too do they gravitate towards specific sports or recreational activities that resonate with them personally.

Imagine if you could have a real say in deciding and building a recreational area, how great would that be?

This year’s Day One O’Level English Oral Candidates were asked how they would plan and design a dream/ideal recreational area. Candidates can share their perspective from the point of view of a young person, illustrating their interests and what were their considerations when it comes to designing a recreational area (for youths like themselves). Candidates can relate how they can consider creating a similar space like SCAPE that appeals to young people of different ages. The venue currently serves as a hub for programmes where youth can pick up new skills, such as dance classes and writing workshops. Other considerations would be the space should cater to the community other than youths.

Qn b) Do you agree that people these days do not have enough time for recreational activities? / “People these days have lesser time for recreational activities.” To what extent is this statement true?

Most candidates would easily breeze through this question, lamenting on how they are caught in a similar predicament. It is however important to recognise the term ‘people’ which suggests that candidates must address people of different ages and not just youths.

Sample response for Oral Question to consider:

“As a young student juggling numerous commitments such as co-curricular activities (CCAs) and rigorous academic studies, my schedule is packed to the brim. Each day, I find myself immersed in a whirlwind of responsibilities—from attending Prefect meetings to training for NSG. The demands of maintaining academic excellence alongside with these active involvement in extracurricular pursuits leave me little room for recreational activities. While I yearn for moments of leisure and relaxation, every minute is meticulously accounted for, leaving me with scarce opportunities to unwind and engage in hobbies purely for enjoyment.”

2024 Oral Day 1 – Recreational Activity / Tech  (Version 2)

Candidates were shown a video of someone unicycling.

Planned Response

What qualities or skills do you think one needs to possess in the activity shown in the video?

Spoken Interaction

(b) There are some people who participate in common interest groups and will share them on their social media. What is your opinion on this?
