With mid-year exams and WA around the corner, today’s blog post will be on tips for Situational Writing.
Situational Writing is an excellent area where students can try to score as high a mark as possible, especially if you find writing to be a chore, Situational Writing is an area where you can work on with more predictability. For paper 1 of O’levels, you will be tested on two types of writing, Situational Writing, and Continuous Writing. Both are of equal weightage.
Situational Writing is found in Paper 1 Section B of O level English Language Papers (Both Old Syllabus 1128 and English Language New Syllabus 1184) which will take effect next in 2023.
Paper 1 is a compulsory section that essentially assesses the candidate’s ability to apply the use of written standard English in practical everyday scenarios. For your script to attain a good grade, you need to understand the purpose, audience, and context of the given question and ensure you write in the correct format with accurate grammar and a variety of vocabulary and sentence structures.
How to get that Distinction in English (for this section)?
You need to demonstrate a high level of personal engagement and inject your personal voice so that you differentiate yourself from the many average scripts that merely copy or re-hash the points given in the stimulus.
To help you along the way, here are some invaluable tips from your English Teachers. In this blog post, we will focus on Informal Letter or Email, paying particular emphasis on how to start informal letters and how to end them impeccably.

Remember that how you end your formal letter is important as well. Students fare well in situational writing when they are mindful of their tones and are able to make a good first impression on the market/reader with their content and style. Choose the wrong closing, and you might damage the tone and impression you have built up earlier.
