Important Changes to Junior College (JC) Admissions from 2028: What Parents Need to Know

Big changes are coming to the Junior College (JC) admission process, and they’re designed with your child’s future in mind.

From 2028 onwards, students applying to Junior Colleges (JCs) will see a significant change in admission requirements. Instead of being assessed on six subjects at the O-Level examinations, they will only need five. This adjustment aims to give students more room to explore their interests and develop holistically beyond academics.

Why the change?

According to MOE, this adjustment aims to give students more room to explore their interests and develop holistically beyond academics.

At the heart of this change is a simple but important goal: to ensure students are not just academically prepared, but also well-rounded individuals ready to take on the future. Whether your child is aiming for JC or Millennia Institute (MI), these updates will provide a more balanced approach to learning, while still maintaining a strong academic foundation.

How Will This Benefit Your Child?

📚 More flexibility – Students can take fewer subjects or study some at a less demanding level.
More time for personal growth – This change allows them to focus on CCAs, leadership roles, and skill development.
🎯 Stronger academic foundation – Subject requirements remain rigorous, ensuring students are well-prepared for JC.

What are some other important changes that will happen in JC admission in 2028?

🔹 Bonus Points Adjustment – The maximum bonus points students can earn (e.g., for CCA or affiliation) will be reduced from 4 to 3 points. Bonus points are those that can be deducted from students’ overall raw scores if they meet certain conditions, to improve their final net scores.
🔹 Millennia Institute (MI) Admissions – The scoring system of L1R4 will also apply to MI, but the qualifying score will remain at 20 points.
🔹 New SEC Examinations from 2027 – The Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) will replace O- and N-Level exams under the full subject-based banding system.
