What’s the secret behind our student’s success in conquering Paper 1?

One of the key priorities that our teachers work on with their students is tacking the writer’s effect questions in Paper 1, Text C.

To do well for Paper 1 in IGCSE First Language English 0500,  students need to familiarise themselves with the techniques to answer Paper 1. Students need to be able to analyse and appreciate the writer’s craft and intentions behind various techniques. By learning to recognise and articulate the effects of language, students will develop the critical thinking skills necessary to excel in exams and beyond.

In  IGCSE 0500 First Language Paper 1 is Text C, students are expected to put on their analytical hat and proceed to work on writers’ effect questions identifying the techniques and effect that the writers are trying to create in the passage.

How to answer these writer’s effect questions for IGCSE 0500 English?

In IGCSE examination, students will be asked to analyse writer’s effect for fiction. In the examination, students are graded for their ability to:

  • select evocative or unusual words and for an understanding of ways in which the language is effective.
  • select a range of choices to demonstrate an understanding of how language works, and these should include the types of imagery being used.

Let’s use some examples from 2024 IGCSE 0500 English Paper 1 Text C: In the Company of Wolves

Qn 2c

To answer this question,  students need to recognise the requirements of the question, e.g. what does it mean to be appealing?

“I check the park’s website on my phone: ‘Experience Arctic nature up close. Live amongst our rare semi-wild wolves at the ultra-exclusive Wolf Lodge. Revel in the unique feeling of being watched by curious amber eyes; be part of a new story for these marvellous, mythical, misunderstood creatures.”

From the extract, students should recognise the imagery being used and effect of the emotive language, explain how these word choices enhance the appeal of the setting of Aurora Park.

” Qn 2(d)

Re-read paragraphs 9 and 10. • Paragraph 9 begins ‘From inside …’ and is about the first evening in the lodge. • Paragraph 10 begins ‘Next morning …’ and is about meeting the wolves. Explain how the writer uses language to convey meaning and to create effect in these paragraphs. Choose three examples of words or phrases from each paragraph to support your answer. Your choices should include the use of imagery.

Write about 200 to 300 words”

To answer this question type,  students need to be able to identify the types of imagery used in the paragraph. Next, students need to select powerful or unusual words and have an understanding of ways in which the language is effective.

From the extract above, students need to note the writer’s choice of strong adjectives and verbs like plush (mountain lodge): comfortable, expensively appointed, suggests soft/furry toy or material and how this creates a warm and welcoming effect.

The Impact of Language in Writing

The use of language by a writer profoundly shapes readers’ experiences across several dimensions. Intellectually, it conveys nuanced ideas and suggestions that encourage deeper contemplation. Imaginatively, language paints vivid sensory impressions, immersing readers in richly crafted worlds. Emotionally, the deliberate choice of words can evoke strong feelings—anger, pity, suspense—creating a powerful connection to the narrative. Aesthetically, it appeals to our sense of beauty, inviting appreciation for the artistry of expression.

On a more visceral level, it can provoke physical reactions, particularly in horror genres where tension and fear come to life. Ultimately, the transformational power of language reshapes readers’ perceptions of life, leaving a lasting impression that resonates long after the story ends.
