How to choose a secondary school in 2025? What are PSLE Posting Groups? G1, G2, G3

For most parents, choosing a secondary school differs from that of a primary school. In an ideal world, most parents would want to choose a secondary school that is both “good” in terms of ranking and near their home but sometimes reality turns out differently.  Should you choose a secondary school that is near or one which is highly recommended by your relatives or neighbours? Is the culture of the school important? What about CCA?

Choose a secondary school for your child is an important decision, and there are several key things to think about to make sure you pick the best fit for you. To help parents prepare their child for Secondary One, we have provided some top school exam papers and free resources for parents. Let our tutors help your child excel in their academics. Get a free tutor profile and select an MOE teacher (ex or current)  to support your child in his or her studies.

Here are some factors to consider when choosing a Secondary School:

1) Identify School Programmes that will nurture your child’s strength

When selecting a secondary school, it’s crucial to consider your child’s interests and strengths. This decision can have a major impact on their life, as the transition from primary to secondary school can be quite challenging. For example, if your child has a passion for STEM, you might want to explore schools with a strong STEM program, such as SST, School of Science and Technology.

After six years of primary school, most parents have realised their kids strengths and it will beneficial to identify the best school that matches your child’s unique talents and interests. Some schools have stronger sports programmes while some others have may have special academic programmes offered by the school, such as gifted education programs or accelerated learning programs. Take Commonwealth Secondary School for instance, this school located in West Coast near Pandan Reservoir, has Environmental Science as a focus discipline. They have a nursery and greenhouse within in the school. The school prides itself as one of the schools leading the way in implementing sustainability features and concepts. Make time to go for School Open Houses (usually a week or two before or after PSLE Results or in May for IP schools.)

Another school with interesting programmes will be Methodist Girl’s School located at Bukit Timah, other than offering both O’levels and IP- the International Baccalaureate programme, it has quite an  interesting range of CCAs such as Artistic Swimming (Girls), Guitar Ensemble, Handbell Ensemble, football, tennis and more. In terms of programmes, the school has interesting offerings like “The MGS Intergenerational Learning (IGL) Festival which is an initiative under the school’s Character and Citizenship Programme.

Each year the school will organise a festival bringing together educators, researchers, practitioners, and community leaders to delve into the rich tapestry of intergenerational learning as a context for the development of Character and Citizenship Competencies. Take for instance,  MGS have youth-lead activities like Crochet and Culinary Classes, where the school will invite seniors to participate or collaborate. If you are keen to find out more about MGS, visit their website or engage one of our MOE/NIE teachers-tutors, some of our teachers are alumni from top schools like MGS, RGS, NYGH and more. If you are looking for a tutor, WhatsApp us and we will send you some teachers’ profiles for consideration.

2) School’s Culture

Would you choose a SAP school simply because your child went to one in primary school or you want your child to be better in Chinese? SAP schools are built on principles of  preserving top Chinese-language schools and fostering the development of bilingual students with strong foundations in traditional Chinese values. There are 11 Secondary SAP schools in Singapore. They are Anglican High, Catholic High, CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’ School. Chung Cheng High School (Main), Chung Cheng High School (Yishun), Dunman High School, Hwa Chong Institution, Maris Stella High School, Nanyang Girls High School, Nan Chiau High School, Nan Hua High School and River Valley High School. For more information on ranking of SAP schools and cut-off points, click here.

Do also note that all ethnicities are welcome to join SAP schools. Some top IP SAP schools  offer special programmes such as Bicultural Studies Programme (BSP) with the objective of cultivating  bilingual students into professionals capable of engaging with China.

3) Location

Yes, Singapore may be a small country, but we are a bustling city-state with a fast-paced lifestyle. Like most major cities, Singapore experiences heavy traffic during peak hours—typically in the morning (7 AM to 9 AM) and evening (5 PM to 7 PM). While many youths are independent and able to travel on their own, it’s still important to choose a secondary school that’s within a reasonable travel distance.

Secondary school days are generally longer, with additional commitments such as Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) and other school responsibilities. On days without CCA, students are usually dismissed around 3:30 PM to 4:00 PM, but when they have CCA, they may finish as late as 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM. After such a busy day, the last thing they want is to be stuck in traffic, which can add unnecessary stress to their already demanding lives. This is why we are sharing with you a list of schools in your district.

Today let’s look at some popular schools in the West.
